A Day with the Volleyball Conquerors
At the airport, in the boarding lounge.
Kamina: Nicolas, give this to Héléna Dantas.
She gives him a necklace.
Nicolas: I'll do my best, honey.
Miss Agri: Tell us everything when you get back!
Justin: Promise! With all the details.
Miss Agri: If you could get me a holographic autograph
of Aristide Savax, it would be...
Justin and Nicolas laughing: Brilliant.
Miss Agri: That's the word!!!
A voice on the PA system announces the final boarding call
Justin and Nicolas enter the shuttle.
Miss Agri: And don't get into too much mischief.
Kamina: Bye.
Miss Agri and Kamina wave goodbye as the shuttle takes off.
The hostess: Welcome aboard space shuttle THURSDAY, bound for
orbiting station RAM. Our flight will last 4 hours in hyperspace.
You may unfasten your seatbelts now.
Nicolas: Are you okay?
Justin: This is the first time I've travelled in hyperspace.
Nicolas: Don't tell me you're scared?
Justin: Take that back right now!
Nicolas: Try to catch me.
They chase each other around.
The hostess: Return to your seats immediately!
You are not on a football field.
Justin and Nicolas wink at each other.
Nicolas teleports onto his seat and Justin goes back to his seat with his super speed.
The hostess carries on talking.
The hostess: And your behavior...
Justin: Did you see that? This hostess is talking to herself.
Nicolas: It's the stress, I tell you!
The hostess is stunned. Nicolas and Justin are doubled over laughing.
The hostess: How?
The spaceship goes into hyperspace.
4 hours later, Nicolas wakes up. He gives Justin a little shake.
Justin: Mm, I was having such a good sleep.
The hostess: Ladies and Gentlemen, our starship will soon be landing
on station RAM. We hope that you had a
pleasant journey and you will travel with us again.
The starship lands. The passengers get up. Nicolas and Justin go past the hostess.
They snicker to themselves. Nicolas takes out a map.
Justin: Forget it, I know the way. I studied the map before we left.
This is our shuttle
They board the shuttle. They are packed like sardines.
Nicolas: What a crowd!
Justin: Not surprising, with tickets to an exhibition match of the Volleyball Conquerors,
and the chance of going on the court and playing with them!
Nicolas: It would be great if we were selected.
Justin: For both of us to be picked at random from the entire crowd, I doubt it.
Nicolas: I can always dream.
Justin: This is where we have to get off.
There is already an impressive line-up.
Nicolas: We're going to be waiting hours.
Justin: No we won't. Follow me.
He drags him down an alley. They are followed by a girl.
A little further on.
Justin: There we are. We short-circuited three-quarters of the line.
I was right to study the map.
Jennifer: Yes, indeed you're good to have around.
The boys turn round and see a girl with purple hair.
Justin: Recognition at last!
Nicolas rolls his eyes.
Justin: Let me introduce myself. Justin, a.k.a. good to have around.
Jennifer: Jennifer
Nicolas: Nicolas
They're getting near the stadium entrance. When...
Crowd: Look at that.
Crowd: A Sage
Jennifer is separated from Nicolas and Justin by the crowd
who are getting excited at the sight of this character dressed in a red toga,
hiding his face, and levitating.
A man explains to his children: There are four Sages.
They are the keepers of universal peace. They can read your thoughts.
They are the ones who worked out the new rules for mutant athletics.
Sport is a great way for mutants to use their powers.
The security guard: Tickets, please.
They give him their tickets and settle into the bleachers.
Nicolas: The purple-haired girl is cute, don't you think?
Justin: Yeah, she's gorgeous! Great, it's gonna start.
The commentator: You are all waiting for them, and here they are.
Let me remind you that this is Aristide Savax's last match.
For this occasion, two people randomly chosen from the audience
will be able to play with this fabulous team.
Brian: No problem, my father bribed the referee so I'd be picked.
Nicolas: Did I hear right?
Brian: Got a problem?
Nicolas: Yes, you!
Brian: Don't you know who you're talking to?
Nicolas: Oh, yes! You are Brian Belcher, heir of the Belcher group.
And, honestly, I'm not impressed.
Justin: The Belcher group?
Brian: Yeah, so stay out of this conversation, moron.
Audience: Shhh. We can't hear a thing.
Nicolas inside: I wonder what's keeping me from shutting this
daddy's boy's mouth for him.
The commentator: Let me introduce "the Volleyball Conquerors" :
Marie Allen the Elastic Woman, Christine Kettering the Metal Woman,
Héléna Dantas the Flying Woman, Adele Mcgill and her Super Strength,
Travis Clark the Human Torch and Aristide Savax the Flying Man.
For this exhibition match, they will be facing the ASU team with
Edmond Proctor and his Super Strength, Margaret Quick the Flying Woman,
Markus Hofer the Ice Man, Francoise Boulegue another Flying Woman,
David Poliris the Double Man and Christiane Jaud with her Protective Shield
The match starts. The audience is mesmerized. Edmond Proctor spikes.
Justin: What strength! Who can recover a smash like that?
Nicolas: Aristide Savax obviously! Look, it's fantastic.
I mean, without shock absorbing bracelets, he would have broken his wrists.
Alex: Someday, I will be as strong as Edmond Proctor or Adele Mcgill
Nicolas and Justin turn towards the voice.
They see a brown-haired guy with glasses, built like a brick wall.
Justin: What was that you were you saying?
Alex: Someday, I will be as strong as the two super men
because I have the same power they have.
Nicolas: Super strength.
Alex: Exactly!
Justin: I have Super Speed and he...
Nicolas: Thanks for the 'he'!
Justin: And Nicolas, the touchy guy, can teleport.
Alex: So you're mutants like me, then.
Justin: Well, yes, I am. Justin Loiret.
Nicolas: Nicolas Pockski.
Alex: Alexander Costaud (strapping in English)
Justin: The name goes with the man, I see!
Nicolas: Hey, look.
The commentator: Bad reception by Christine Kettering.
The ball goes up towards the ceiling and towards the audience. But what's happening?
A green haired girl from the audience makes an extraordinary jump.
She'll touch the ceiling if she goes on like that! No, she spikes and
comes back down like it's nothing.
Markus Hofer recovers the ball and waves "thank you"
to the girl with the green hair. Everyone applauds her.
Brian: Poor idiot… She thinks that her little jump can compete with my power.
Nicolas feels someone touch his shoulder. He turns around quickly.
Nicolas: Justin, stop!
Justin: What?
His other shoulder is touched.
Nicolas: I saw you.
A female voice: I don't think so.
Alex: Who's talking?
Jennifer makes herself visible and then invisible again.
Nicolas: You!
Jennifer: Jennifer Stiehlschmeyer. But my real name is Geneviève, at your service.
Alex: Mutant
Justin: I think I've figured out what power you have.
Jennifer: Really?
Nicolas: In any case, you've got a weird last name.
They laugh when the girl with super jumps goes past them.
Justin: Look here's the other frog.
She jumps on him.
Dita: Take that back right now
Justin: Stop her! She's crazy.
Dita: You'll soon see whether I am a frog or not!
Jenny, Alex and Nick try to separate them.
They're making a lot of noise when a loud cry is heard
and forces our friends to cool off.
Nicolas: Oh, my poor head!
Jennifer: Alarms like that should be banned.
Alex: What's that noise?
Justin: Can I take my hands off my ears without risking lifelong deafness?
Dita: Who did that?
Dorothy: I did! Listen if you want to argue, go outside.
I'm here to see the Volleyball Conquerors and that's all.
Brian: Well said!
Dorothy: You can close your trap. You're the one who passed in front of Dita and me
claiming to be Brian Belcher.
Nicolas looking at Dorothy: This girl has class.
Dita: Yeah, and we waited three hours.
Brian: Who do you think YOU are? I'm gonna...
Jennifer: Look!
The Sage levitates and comes towards our friends.
Nicolas: I think trouble is brewing.
Alex: This guy scares me.
Justin: Me, too.
Brian: I didn't do anything.
Dorothy: And a coward, as well.
The commentator: Adele Mcgill and Travis Clark leave the court.
Jennifer: Why are they leaving the court? I don't get it.
The Sage points at Justin and Nicolas. They sink into their seats.
Marie Allen signals them to join her on the court.
Dita: I didn't think that the two people would be selected that way.
Alex: Neither did your father, did he, Brian?!
Brian: They're gonna make fools of themselves.
The commentator: Our 2 players are Justin Loiret and his super speed
and Nicolas Pockski the teleport boy.
Dita: How does he know them?
Jennifer: The Sage read their minds and sent the information to the commentator.
Dorothy: I would like to be in their shoes.
Alex: So would I.
The commentator: Serve by Margaret. Quick, received by Marie Allen
who passes to Nicolas. He teleports but arrives too late.
Nicolas: Sorry
Brian: No-good rubbish
The commentator: Serve by Christiane Jaud, recovered rather randomly
by Christine Kettering who manages to pass to Aristide Savax who spikes.
Dita: Superb hit.
The commentator: This Aristide Savax is a real champion.
Serve by Francoise Boulegue but Justin, in spite of his speed, misses this ball.
Justin: Dash it!
The commentator: Another point missed by Nicolas Pockski.
Nicolas: I don't believe this! There are people who would pay a fortune
to be in my shoes and I'm playing like a brick in a swimming pool.
Justin: I want to show them what I can do. Nicolas, should we try our special move?
Nicolas: We have nothing more to lose.
Jennifer: The poor guys
Dita: They're intimidated by the opposite team.
Alex: With good reason.
Brian: They're really useless.
Dorothy: So you think you could do better than them?
Brian starts to shout: Hey, you two losers, let me show you how to play volleyball!
Nicolas: Sure, go ahead.
Gathering himself together, he turns to Christine Kettering of the Volleyball Conquerors.
Nicolas: Well, can he?
But before Christine can answer, the telepathic voice of a Sage replies to everyone:
Yes, he can! He will take Edmond Proctor's place.
And so he will be your and your team-mate's opponent!
The commentator: This new player will replace Edmond Proctor
from the ASU team. He will play against our two lucky winners
who are playing with the Volleyball Conquerors.
Brian: We're going to enjoy this.
Justin: You know his power?
Nicolas: Not, but coming from him, I'm expecting nothing good.
Jennifer: I don't like that.
Dita: Me neither.
The commentator: Brian starts to spin around faster and faster.
Brian: I am called the TORNADO.
Alex: What a wind!!!
The commentator: The tornado has just launched a super powerful serve
and Justin arrives too late.
Dorothy: What speed!!!
Jennifer: You've got to see it to believe it.
Brian: Pitiful and it's not over yet. Just try to stop my spike!
The commentator: Aristide Savax serves. The ball is recovered at the last minute by David Poliris.
He passes it to Brian, who spikes in spite of Nicolas Pocski, who had teleported himself
and Héléna Dantas, who had dived to make a wall.
Brian: Shall we go on with the massacre?
Nicolas: We're here to have fun.
Justin: Not to fight.
Brian: You're cowardly chickens! You're scared. I bet you won't be able to break through my wall
The commentator: Markus Hoffer serves. Marie Allen is about to receive
when she is beat to it by Justin Loiret.
Justin: Now!
The commentator: Justin has just received and sends the ball directly to Aristide Savax.
Brian has turned into a tornado.
Brian: Come on!
The commentator: Aristide Savax prepares to spike when Nicolas Pockski teleports
in front of him and spikes.
Nicolas: Yes!
Jennifer: A double attack!
Alex: Good idea!
The commentator: The ball is in!
The crowd applauds enthusiastically. Brian is flattened.
Dorothy: Well done, guys.
Dita: Especially the Teleport.
The commentator: I guess the Tornado has lost his impetus.
Nicolas walks over to Brian.
Nicolas: Justin and I trained hard for this double attack.
It would be nice to create a team with you and your power.
Justin: Yeah, that's true. We started off on the wrong foot but...
Brian: Are you nuts? You humiliated me in front of everybody!
And my power is much more powerful than both of yours put together, so keep your pity.
Nicolas: But...
Dorothy shouts: If he doesn't feel like it, too bad for him! I'm willing to take his place.
Jennifer cries: You'll need an Invisible girl.
Alex yells: And a real Strong guy
Dita shouts: And a Super Jumper!
Nicolas: Can they all come, then?
The Volleyball Conquerors and the ASU nod. Nicolas waves the other youngsters in.
They go onto the court. Brian goes back into the audience.
Justin: No way! I'm not playing with her.
Dita: Just a minute there, my boy.
Jennifer: Oh, no!
Alex: They're starting again.
They try to separate them. Once again they hear a loud scream.
They look at each other and burst out laughing.
Justin: It's all right. We got it. Sorry, Frog.
Dita: Forget it, Slug.
Nicolas to Héléna Dantas: Before we play, could I get a holographic autograph?
Justin: And a signed ball.
Nicolas: I've got a gift from Kamina. She's 10. She made it herself.
He hands it to Héléna Dantas, who puts it round her neck immediately.
The six youngsters from the public play turn about with the ASU team
and the Volleyball Conquerors and have a great time. The spectators are delighted!
Later
Nicolas: Aristide Savax's last game was some show!
Dorothy: Your spike was fantastic.
Dita: It's just as well he's a great champion, because if he wasn't,
you would have got his hand in your face. He was ready to spike.
Alex: He's got amazing reflexes. How well he handles his power!
Justin sighing: We leave tomorrow.
Jennifer: Here is my number, Alex.
Justin: You're a lucky guy.
Nicolas: Shall we try to keep in touch?
Alex: I go to Downtown Junior High School. What about you?
Justin: So do we.
Alex: I'm new.
Justin: That explains everything!
Nicolas: It's gonna be great. We already have three players.
Jennifer: Four.
Nicolas: You too? Are you new, too?
She nods and takes a discreet look at Alex.
Justin: We're going to have a great time.
Nicolas: Alexander, I think you've got a chance with Jennifer.
Alex is blushing.
Dorothy: We gotta go. See you later.
Dita: So long.
They all go their separate ways. Nobody pays any attention to the Tornado.
Brian: We'll meet again sooner than they think. We'll see who has the last laugh.
Only one Sage and Aristide Savax are left.
The Wise telepathically: They have great potential.
Mr. Savax: I know.
